Orchestra of the Pines to present 'Broadway, Movies and Classics'

NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - The Orchestra of the Pines will present "Broadway, Movies and Classics" in Cole Concert Hall at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 28, and again at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, March 1.

"We have received much encouragement from the community and faculty to offer a pops concert during our regular season," said Gene H. Moon, director of orchestral activities at SFA and the orchestra's music director. "And we are excited to be offering both an evening and afternoon concert to accommodate the anticipated crowds."

The concert will include four original signature edition soundtracks by John Williams: "Star Wars," "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone," "Superman" and "Schindler's List." The latter will feature violinist Jennifer Dalmas, SFA assistant professor of music and the orchestra's concertmaster.

"Children will probably recognize some of Williams' songs, and they'll also enjoy the Disney tunes included on the program," Moon said.

SFA music faculty members Debbie Berry, Nita Hudson and Scott LaGraff will be the featured vocalists on selections from "The Sound of Music" and "South Pacific," and Kimberly LaGraff will join her husband on performing songs from "Oklahoma!" and "Phantom of the Opera."

Interspersed with the music from Broadway shows and movies are Aaron Copland's "Hoedown," Richard Strauss' "Blue Danube," and Edvard Grieg's "Morning Mood" and "In the Hall of the Mountain King."

"The program is filled with recognizable music and has a little something for everyone," said Moon.

"Recent concerts in Cole Concert Hall by the Orchestra of the Pines have sold out," said Diane Flynn, SFA Fine Arts Box Office manager. "And even though there will be two performances, we encourage patrons to purchase their tickets early."

Tickets are $15 for adults, $12 for seniors and $5 for students and youth. For tickets and more information, please visit www.sfasu.edu/finearts or call (936) 468-6407 or (888) 240-ARTS.

The concerts are a joint presentation of the SFA College of Fine Arts, School of Music and Orchestra Series. They are sponsored in part by Nacogdoches Memorial Hospital and the Wedgeworth-Wright Endowment for the Arts.
