SFA Madrigal Singers to present fall concert

The SFA Madrigal Singers will perform music spanning five centuries at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 28, in Cole Concert Hall on the SFA campus.

NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - The SFA Madrigal Singers, a 16-member ensemble composed primarily of upper level vocal majors, will present a concert of chamber music at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 28, in Cole Concert Hall on the SFA campus.

The vocalists will perform sets, or groups of songs, ranging from 16th century madrigals to a collection of Beatles tunes, said Dr. Tim King, SFA director of choral activities and the group's director.

The Italian madrigals are based on intense and emotional poetry, while the English madrigals are light-hearted, King continued.

The singers will also present a set of eight French folk-tunes by 20th century composer Francis Poulenc and "Five Newfoundland Songs" by contemporary Canadian composer Harry Somers.

In Somers' wonderful collection of drinking, love and sailor songs, he employs 'chin' or 'mouth' music to characterize instruments that might have originally accompanied the singing of these folk songs," King explained.

The concert will close with a collection of Beatles songs, arranged by Lufkin graduate composition major Garry Wickliffe, a member of the Madrigal Singers.

"We are delighted to be premiering some of Garry's most recent work," King said. "He published his first pieces while still an undergraduate, and the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers has already recognized his talent with two awards."

The concert is a joint presentation of the SFA College of Fine Arts and School of Music.
Cole Concert Hall is located at 2210 Alumni Dr.

Tickets for the concert are $5 for adults, $4 for seniors and $2 for students. For tickets or more information, please visit www.sfasu.edu/finearts or call (936) 468-6407 or (888) 240-ARTS.
