SFA offering children's Creative Art Saturday

September 4, 2008

NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - Area 6- to 12-year-olds may register for an art class offered by the Stephen F. Austin State University School of Art from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 13, at The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House, 329 E. Main Street in downtown Nacogdoches.

Participants will view the "SFA Faculty Exhibition" currently on display in the Jack and Doris Ledbetter Gallery, learn proportions for drawing a face and create monochromatic self-portrait watercolor paintings, all under the guidance of Dr. Marsha Blount, SFA assistant professor of art education, and SFA art education majors.

The class is the first of the monthly Creative Art Saturdays that Blount and her students will be offering throughout the fall semester. Future classes, each with a different emphasis, are scheduled for Oct. 11, Nov. 15 and Dec. 6.

The $10 registration fee for each session covers the cost of materials and benefits the Art Education Association. Parents may pre-register at The Cole Art Center during normal hours (12:30 to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday) or by e-mailing Blount at blountmarsh@sfasu.edu. Class size is limited to 20.

"We ask that parents escort the children to and from the classroom that is on the second floor of the center," Blount said. "Parents are also welcome, but not required, to stay."
