SFA's chamber music festival closes Sunday

August 12, 2009
John W. Goodall, SFA associate dean of fine arts and professor of oboe, will be among the musicians performing chamber music during the "Classicism Concert" at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 16, in Cole Concert Hall.
NACODGDOCHES, TEXAS -The Stephen F. Austin State University School of Music will close its 2009 Chamber Music in the Pines Festival with the "Classicism Concert" at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 16, in Cole Concert Hall on the SFA campus.
SFA music faculty members John W. Goodall, oboe; Jennifer Dalmas, violin; Gene H. Moon, viola; and Evgeni Raychev, cello; will open the concert with "Oboe Quartet in B flat major, B. 60" by Johann Christian Bach.
"This charming piece written by J.S. Bach's youngest son in 1776 shows the break from the highly contrapuntal Baroque music to the more ordered homophonic Classical style," said Goodall. "J.C. Bach is known for his influence on young Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart; I believe the audience will hear distinct similarities in their music."
Also included on the program is Joseph Haydn's "Piano Trio in D major, Hob. XV:16, performed by Dalmas, Raychev and guest pianist Jean Roberts.
"Although Haydn may be best known in chamber music as the father of the string quartet, he wrote some wonderful piano trios, and this piece is a lovely, cheerful example of his writing for the genre," said Dalmas.
To close the concert, Moon will join the trio in presenting Mozart's "Piano Quartet No. 1 in G minor, K. 478," a work of intensity and exuberance that is considered the first great piano quartet ever written, according to Dalmas.
Immediately after the concert, the SFA Friends of Music will host a reception in the Cole lobby.
Tickets, which can be purchased at the door, are $10 for adults, $7.50 for seniors and $5 for students. Cole Concert Hall is located at 2210 Alumni Dr. on the SFA campus.
