SFA Pineywoods Native Plant Center offers 'Meet the Creepy Crawlers'
November 10, 2009 - Shirley Luna
Nacogdoches Naturally will sponsor a family educational program at Stephen F. Austin State University's Pineywoods Native Plant Center on Saturday, Nov. 14. "Meet the Creepy Crawlers" will allow families to meet some of the creatures of the woods in a safe, educational environment at the center, located at 2900 Raguet St.
"We will be learning about snakes, spiders, and bees," says Kerry Lemon, project director of Nacogdoches Naturally. "These seem to be some of the most commonly misunderstood animals that are frequently encountered in the woods of East Texas. It is our hope that by introducing them in this non-threatening way, some of the fears that people have may be overcome."
While some parents and children may be fearful of the unknown aspects of the out-of-doors, others may have concerns based on misconceptions, lack of experience or even personal experience. Lemon said much of this can be remedied through education and familiarity.
Nacogdoches Naturally is a project sponsored by grant from Texas Parks and Wildlife. Activities are designed to cultivate outdoor skills and an awareness of outdoor education with the goal of families developing a lifetime enjoyment in the natural world. Programs are family friendly and appropriate for all ages.
Cost for the event is $5 per family.
