Career Opportunities

In general, the employment prospects in chemistry and biochemistry are very good. Currently, average starting salaries are $35,000 to $45,000 annually with unlimited top earning potential after a number of years experience. The career services office arranges for many companies to visit SFA to recruit new employees. Job inquiries are frequently made by various industries in the region concerning the availability of new graduates for employment. Some career options are:

• The pharmaceutical industry employs chemists and biochemists in the drug industry.
• Texas' seven medical schools provide numerous job opportunities in medical research.
• The Texas Department of Health offers many career positions in state laboratories.
• The Texas Natural Resource Conservation Commission has positions in regulatory affairs.
• The Department of Chemistry often provides temporary positions for graduate students.
• Graduate programs are available at various universities, as well as professional programs in medicine, pharmacy and dentistry.
