SFA to present guest flute and guest horn recitals

March 2, 2010

NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - The Stephen F. Austin State University College of Fine Arts and School of Music will present two guest artist recitals on Tuesday, March 9, in Cole Concert Hall on the SFA campus.

At 6 p.m., Shelley Binder, associate professor of flute at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville, and Geneva Fung, SFA accompanist, will perform. At 7:30 p.m., Adam Unsworth, associate professor of horn at the University of Michigan, and pianist James Pitts, SFA staff accompanist, will present a recital of classical and jazz works for horn. Both recitals are free and open to the public.

Included on Binder's program are "Fantasie" by George Hüe, Francis Poulenc's "Sonata for Flute and Piano," and works by David Sartor and Phillip Kent Bimstein. Christina Guenther, SFA assistant professor of flute, will join Binder in performing Franz Doppler's "Andante and Rondo."

Binder, who earned her Doctor of Music from Florida State University, has played with the Virginia Symphony, Virginia Opera and Central Wisconsin Symphony Orchestra and has appeared as a recitalist and clinician throughout the United States. She studied under flutist and composer Louis Moyse and recently finished writing his biography.

Unsworth, who is an internationally acclaimed horn artist, is equally comfortable in the classical and jazz worlds, according to Charles Gavin, SFA professor of horn. His program will include classical standards such as Beethoven's "Sonata for Horn and Piano Op. 17" and Jan Koetsier's "Sonatina for Horn and Piano," as well as Unsworth's own jazz compositions.

Prior to joining the faculty at the University of Michigan, Unsworth was a member of the Philadelphia Orchestra and the Detroit Symphony. He has appeared as a recitalist and clinician at universities throughout the United States and has performed repeated solo and chamber concerts at Carnegie's Weill Recital Hall. He is also the leader of his own jazz group, the Adam Unsworth Ensemble.

Cole Concert Hall is located in the Wright Music Building, 2210 Alumni Dr. For more information, please call (936) 468-6407 or (888) 240-ARTS.
