The Department of Kinesiology and Health Science is one of five departments in the . The department prepares health science, kinesiology and dance teachers as well as non-teaching professionals, in areas such as community health, corporate fitness, athletic training, etc., and also is responsible for the development of total fitness and recreational sports skills for the university community through programs of fitness and lifetime sports. In addition, programs leading to endorsement and certification are offered in the areas of athletic training, first aid and water safety. The department offers opportunity for the preparation of athletic coaches. SFA's was the first department in Texas to receive accreditation from the in the undergraduate kinesiology program. The graduate program is accredited by this same group. The health science program has received accreditation from the American Association of Health Education (AAHE).
Majors & Minors
The Department of Kinesiology and Health Science provides the following programs:

Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology: both teaching and nonteaching programs are provided, depending on student interest and career objectives; students intending to coach typically major in kinesiology;

Bachelor of Science in Health Science: both teaching and nonteaching (Public Community Health) options are available; CHES (Certified Health Education Specialist) credential is available through the National Commission for Health Education Credentialing Inc. to students who complete a minimum of 24 hours of health science course work and have earned a baccalaureate degree;

Bachelor of Science in Dance: a major in dance as well as a dance teaching field are offered; opportunities for performance and production experience are afforded through the departmental dance company, which performs on the university campus and at area schools and cities;

Students seeking elementary education teacher certification with health science or kinesiology specialization.

A minor in coaching is available to students interested in coaching athletic teams and teaching subjects other than kinesiology. This minor also will be beneficial for anyone wanting to coach youth sports, city parks and recreation leagues, YMCA leagues, etc.

Admission to The SFA Repertory Company, the department's dance performance group, is by audition. A concentrated rehearsal schedule during the fall semester culminates in an annual formal concert.
