Pre-health professions programs is a division of the College of Sciences and Mathematics. Its purpose is to provide the opportunity for students to complete the academic requirements for professional schools offering training in the health care fields, engineering and architecture. (Pre-engineering and architecture information is available from the physics department; health care fields from biology.) At SFA, students may become eligible to apply for admission into many professional schools in Texas, including medical, dental, optometry, pharmacy, veterinary medicine, engineering and architecture. Students also may complete admissions requirements for many allied health programs, including occupational and physical therapy, and physician's assistant.
Officials at SFA have no control over determining admissions requirements at the various professional schools. The curricula used will satisfy the entrance requirements of professional schools, particularly such schools in Texas and satisfy the requirements for graduation from SFA.
Interested students should confer with the director of pre-health professions programs and with members of the Professional Advisory Committee as early as possible in their academic careers.
Admission into most professional schools is highly competitive, and applicants are expected to demonstrate outstanding academic ability and strong motivation for their chosen field. Most medical and dental schools require a minimum of three years of college work but favor completion of the bachelor of science degree. Some programs require prior experience as part of the application requirements; all feel that it is extremely important.
SFA has a reputation for providing excellent preparation for students wishing to enter the health care professions, and those who complete the academic challenges here are given strong consideration for admission.
