The orientation and mobility program at SFA is one of two undergraduate programs in the United States. An orientation and mobility specialist teaches visually impaired individuals those skills needed to be able to travel safely and independently. If the visually impaired person has some remaining vision, he or she is taught how to use that remaining vision as much as possible in conjunction with low-vision aids and devices. If needed, he or she learns to safely and efficiently travel using a white cane. Basic concept development and accommodation of special needs of individuals with additional disabilities are incorporated into the program.
Graduates are eligible for national certification by The Academy for Certification of Vision, Rehabilitation and Education Professionals.
