Family music activities added to SFA tailgating

October 21, 2011
NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - Two free music activities for families will be available in the tailgating area prior to the SFA Lumberjacks' last two home football games on Saturday, Oct. 29, and Saturday, Nov. 12.

Music education students from the Stephen F. Austin State University School of Music will be teaching folk dancing and Japanese Taiko drumming next to the Alumni Association's tent and the playground of the Early Childhood Resource Center.

"Our culture is experiencing a renaissance of what Americans took for granted decades ago-families making and enjoying music together," said Dr. Mark E. Turner, associate professor of elementary music education. "This Carpe Musica project, which expands the scope and reach of music from the schoolhouse into the community, provides families with enjoyable, easy-to-learn, hands-on music experiences."

For the homecoming game on Oct. 29, the Carpe Musica activities will begin at 1 p.m. and end at 2:30 p.m., 30 minutes before kick-off. For the 6 p.m. Nov. 12 game, activities will be offered from 4 to 5:30 p.m.
