SFA to screen documentary on Burma

NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - As part of its monthly independent film series, the SFA School of Art will present a free, one-night film screening of "They Call It Myanmar: Lifting the Curtain" at 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 3, at The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House in downtown Nacogdoches.
The 70-minute documentary, shot clandestinely over a two-year period, gives an intimate look inside the isolated country also known as Burma.
According to the synopsis available on the film's website, www.theycallitmyanmar.com, the film "traces the history of Burma from its beginnings in the ancient city of Bagan, through colonial times, recent uprisings, the devastating Cyclone Nargis that killed 150,000 people, and up to the present day" and "(lifts) the curtain on the everyday life of the people in this land that has been held hostage by a brutal and superstitious military regime for 48 years."
"We believe the people of Nacogdoches will find this film particularly interesting since it documents the homeland of some of our newest residents, the Burmese," said Alisa Steed, interim director of the SFA galleries.
"We are grateful to Pilgrim's Pride, which employs over 100 Burmese refugees, for sponsoring this film," Steed continued.
