SFA building construction systems class build framing models

Stephen F. Austin State University junior interior design major Mylinda Fancher puts the finishing touches on her framing model of a 653-square-foot stone cabin with a spiral staircase and loft. SFA School of Human Sciences interior design professor, Dr. Mitzi Perritt, and associate professor, Sally Ann Swearingen, recently had their building construction systems class build models to help learn the details of wood construction. The model serves as a learning tool for understanding the framing of walls, doors, windows, stairs, ceilings, second-level floors and roofs, as well as insulation and layering of roofing materials. The project is the continuation of a home the students designed in a prior studio class. After the framing model is complete, students will finalize their construction drawings to document the foundation plan, furniture layout, wall dimensions, exterior and interior elevations of built-ins, stair detail, building section, electrical/lighting plan, room finishes and window/door/appliance schedules.
