NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - New York guitarist David Burgess will present "Guitar Music of Brazil" at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 11, as part of the Stephen F. Austin State University School of Music's Cole Performing Arts Series.

Praised by critics for his polished technique and flamboyant style, Burgess has performed throughout North and South America, Europe and the Far East and recorded for CBS Masterworks, Musical Heritage Society, Tritone and Athena Records. He has won prizes in international guitar competitions in New York, Mexico City, Toronto and Munich, Germany.

The recital's program is reflective of the many trips Burgess has taken to Brazil to research guitar music from the country's past and to find contemporary Brazilian works.

He will perform two pieces by Raphael Rabella (1962-1985), both of which use strong African rhythms, and works by Antonio Carlos Jobim (1927-1994), who is best known for his "Bossa Nova."

Burgess will also play two pieces by Yamunda Costa, "today's most prominent Brazilian guitarist," according to Burgess. "His compositions are some of the most rhythmically intricate and innovative of all Brazilian guitar music."

Tickets are $5 for adults, $4 for seniors and $2 for students. For tickets or more information, please go to www.finearts.sfasu.edu or call (936) 468-6407 or (888) 240-ARTS.
