NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - The Stephen F. Austin State University School of Music's Wind Symphony and Symphonic Band will perform at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 27, in W.M. Turner Auditorium. The concert is a featured performance of the School of Music's Concert Series.

The Symphonic Band will open the program with "The Hounds of Spring" concert overture by Alfred Reed, said Tamey Anglley, assistant director of bands and the Symphonic Band's director.

"This wind band masterpiece is based on a 19th century poem by Algernon Swinburne and is a magical picture of young love in springtime," she said.

The band will perform a duo of Percy Grainger compositions for band, "Australian Up-Country Tune" and "Country Gardens." The set will feature music education junior Rebecca Robbins on piano. The Symphonic Band will also perform the multi-movement work "Dublin Dances" by Jan Van der Roost, which is an Irish rhapsody drawing from a wealth of Irish folk music. The band will close its half of the concert with the famous march "The Glory of the Yankee Navy" by John Philip Sousa.

Under the direction of David Campo, associate director of bands at SFA, the Wind Symphony will perform Claude Debussy's "The Girl With the Flaxen Hair," which was originally a piano prelude composed in 1910. The Wind Symphony will perform the transcription by Michael Brand. "Morceau de Concert" for Solo Horn and Wind Ensemble will feature SFA Professor of Music Charles Gavin. The original composition was written in 1893 by Camille Saint-Saëns, and the band arrangement was written in 2007 by Michael Rondeau.

To conclude the concert, the Wind Symphony will perform the popular wind band piece "Suite Francaise" by Darius Milhaud, in which each of its five movements is named after French provinces and features folk tunes from each province.
