Dr. Mary Nelle Brunson was appointed Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs in April 2008. Previously she served as Interim Assistant Vice President for Academic Affairs and Assistant Department Chair of Elementary Education. An SFA graduate with a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Education degree, Brunson received her Doctor of Education degree in Early Childhood Education at the University of North Texas. She holds Texas Teacher Certification for grades PK-8 and Mid-Management Administrator certification. After teaching in public schools in Brazosport, Etoile and Nacogdoches and serving as an early childhood consultant, she joined the SFASU faculty in 1993 as an instructor of early childhood education. She was appointed the Campus Academic Leader of the newly formed NISD/SFASU Charter School in 1998 and was named Assistant Department Chair of Elementary Education in 2000, the position she held until her appointment as Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs.
Since joining the faculty, Dr. Brunson has served SFASU in both teaching and administrative capacities. She has taught early childhood education courses at the undergraduate and graduate level, supervised early childhood internships and student teachers and developed online courses for the early childhood graduate program. While teaching, she has assumed various administrative roles including principal of the charter school, assistant chair, coordinator of advising for Elementary Education and NCATE Coordinator for the College of Education. Her many presentations on early childhood education at both state and national conferences include presentations at the National Association for the Education of Young Children, American Educational Research Association and the Association for Childhood Education International.Dr. Brunson has served on a number of committees and advisory boards including the Nacogdoches Head Start Policy Council, Faculty Senate, Teacher Education Council, Nacogdoches ISD Administrative Leadership Team, Professional Development Schools Executive Board and the Summer School Task Force. Currently she is Co-Chair of the Deep East Texas P-16 Advisory Council and serves on the Community Advisory Board for BancorpSouth.
