Study the traditional and the unexpected

If you love the written word, you’ve come to the right place. At SFA’s Department of English and Creative Writing, Lumberjacks have access to programs and coursework that you simply won’t find anywhere else, like our popular electives like Invented Languages or Forensic Linguistics. And if creative writing is more your style, you’re in luck: SFA’s Bachelor of Fine Arts in creative writing is the only program of its kind in Texas – and one of only 16 in the country!

A message from the department chair, Mark Sanders

We have exciting program opportunities available to students whose passions are literary. Not only do we have a comprehensive program in literature, we offer unique experiences in creative writing, linguistics, publishing, technical and professional writing, English education and writing for the digital age, among other possibilities. Students will develop skills that will put them to the forefront of career and professional advancement. Our students become teachers, editors, publishers, lawyers, songwriters, advertisement copywriters, linguists and public relations experts. Many go on to Master of Arts, Master of Fine Arts and Ph.D. programs to become college and university professors. Faculty are engaged in scholarship, research and creative work, and, because we retain a small teacher-to-student ratio, they become important mentors to our students as they design their futures. SFA's Department of English and Creative Writing is a great program, and we're here to help!
