About the Aquatics program

Campus Recreation's Aquatics program offers recreation for individuals of all ages to enjoy. Our outdoor aquatic facility features a 270 ft. lazy river, large capacity spa, a diving well, lap lanes, and an open recreation area for everyone to enjoy. The Aquatics Program houses group and private swim lessons, certification classes, and recreational events.

We also will be utilizing the indoor pool in the HPE building for various programs. The HPE facility houses 1 meter and 3 meter diving boards and 6 lap lanes.

Designed to focus on progressive aquatic skill development for participants of all ages and abilities to become safer and better swimmers.

Which Level Is Best for Me?

Level Purpose
Parent and Child
  • Age: 6 months - 3 yrs.
  • Skills Taught: Familiarize children the water and teach swimming readiness skills while also providing safety information for parents and teach techniques parents can use to orient their children to the water. Will integrate games, songs, and activities to keep the children engaged and comfortable while in the water.
  • Criteria to Advance: Age, along with child being able to move freely through water without parents.
  • Age: 4-5 yrs.
  • Skills Taught: Blowing bubbles, opening eyes under water and fully submerging, back float and front float for 3 seconds, alternating and simultaneous leg and arm action on front and back.
  • Criteria to Advance: Child must be able to move independently throughout the water (submerging head, being comfortable on back and front movements).
Level 1
to Water Skills
  • Age: 5/6+ yrs.
  • **Children who have had little to no experience in water are encouraged to start on this level.
  • Skills Taught: Back float, kicks and arm movements on front and back and submerging body. All skills will be done with some hands on from instructors, but mostly independent.
  • Criteria to Advance: Child must perform skills independently and be able to submerge whole body comfortably.
Level 2
Aquatic Skills
  • Age: 6+ yrs.
  • Skills Taught: Build on the basic aquatic skills and water safety skills and concepts learned in Level 1.Will introduce rotary breathing (side-to-side breaths) and different types of floats. Will improve on alternating kicks and arm movements and combined kicks and arm movements while floating on back or stomach.
  • Criteria to Advance: Swim independently using combined arm and leg actions on front for 5 body lengths, and float for 15 seconds.
Level 3
Stroke Development
  • Age: 7/8+ yrs.
  • Skills Taught: Build on the skills learned in levels 1 and 2 to help participants achieve basic water competency in a pool environment. Will improve on treading, and stroke development for: freestyle, breaststroke, and backstroke. Will introduce dolphin and scissor kicks.
  • Criteria to Advance: Swim front crawl for 15 yards and change direction as necessary and swim 15 yards of elementary backstroke.
Level 4/5
Stroke Development
  • Age: 8+ yrs.
  • Skills Taught: Improve participants' proficiency in performing the swimming strokes that were introduced in Level 3. Will improve and become proficient on all the stroke techniques learned throughout Learn-to-Swim program. Will introduce butterfly stoke.
  • Criteria to Advance: Perform a feet first entry into deep water, swim front crawl for 25 yards, change direction and swim elementary backstroke for 25 yards.
