Outdoor Pursuits Trips

Outdoor Pursuits is determined to give students the chance to experience the outdoors and learn the skills they need to enjoy being outside. The OP Trip program has been designed with you, the student, in mind. Transportation, equipment and meals are included in the trip cost. Please stop by the Outdoor Center to sign up and learn more.

Clinic: SFA Mountain Biking 101

Date: Saturday, September 13th

SFA boasts some of the best mountain biking trails in the region. Join us for a Saturday of outdoor adventure as our experienced staff introduce general bike use, maintenance and care, and then develop your skills on the 3 levels of
challenging trails right here on campus.

Clinic: Backpacking 101

Date: Saturday, September 20th

With over 90 National and State Parks, and 9 National and State Forests, Texas offers plenty to do in the outdoors including Backpacking and Hiking.

Join us for a Saturday of outdoor skill developments as we learn about backpacking as part of your backcountry experience. We will cover backcountry basics, food planning and preparation, trip and gear planning. In the afternoon, we'll take a practice hike on the Lanana Creek trail.

Rock Climbing at Reimers Ranch

Join our experienced climbing staff in enjoying one of the premier natural climbing destinations in the Hill Country!

Camp out with other outdoor enthusiasts at night and climb the limestone cliffs each day. We will visit three popular natural areas: Pace Bend Park, Hamilton Pool, and Reimers Ranch. Have you ever wanted to climb outside? Here's your chance!

Intro to Backpacking at Davy Crockett National Forest

Love the outdoors but need more exposure to begin enjoying adventure trips on your own? Part of our Nature Near You series, SFA students will have an opportunity to learn how to plan and execute a backpacking trip safely and comfortably while enjoying a variety of aesthetic and educational experiences through pines, bottomland hardwoods, boggy sloughs, and upland forests. Get out and stretch your legs with us for the weekend!

Leave No Trace Trainer Certification on Neches River

Date: Friday, November 14th - Saturday, November 16th

The Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics, based in Boulder, CO, provides educational opportunities for outdoor enthusiasts aimed at developing low-impact practices related to outdoor recreation. The Trainer Course is a vital component of the nationwide Leave No Trace program and assists student participants in learning more about the seven principles of Leave No Trace.

Trainer Courses are designed for educators, guides, agency employees and other outdoor professionals. Successful graduates of the Trainer Course gain the skills to teach Leave No Trace techniques and ethics to their clients, friends and family, and are prepared to offer official Leave No Trace Awareness Workshops in a variety of settings-such as schools, camps, parks, wilderness and front country areas.

Now available to SFA students at a deeply discounted rate, this condensed weekend adventure course offers official Leave No Trace Trainer certificates and educational materials to participants who successfully complete the curriculum.

Thanksgiving Paddle on the Angelina River

Date: Friday, November 28th - Sunday, November 30th

Stuck in town for Thanksgiving Break? Join us and other students for a weekend on the Angelina River. We will travel to the Angelina National Forest and spend two nights on the river, ending at Martin Dyes State Park.
