Bring: Two #2 pencils, payment, valid photo identification and calculator - You may use a four-function, scientific, or graphing calculator. Prohibited calculators include all calculators in all of the following series: Casio: Algebra fx 2.0, ClassPad 300 and ClassPad 330, and all model numbers that begin with CFX-9970. Texas Instruments: All model numbers that begin with TI-89 or TI-92 and the TI-Nspire CAS. Hewlett-Packard: HP 48GII and all model numbers that begin with HP 40G, HP 49G or HP 50G. Calculators with a typewriter keypad (keys in QWERTY format) are not permitted. Other calculators may be added to the prohibited list by ACT.   • Students must wait 60 days before re-taking the ACT Residual test. When this retest restriction is violated, the retest score will be canceled automatically.
  • Students planning to participate in intercollegiate sports MUST take the ACT on a national test date.

CURRENT (NOT-EXPIRED) OFFICIAL PHOTO IDENTIFICATION (i.e. driver’s license, passport, school ID) must be presented at check-in or you will not be permitted to test. The identification must be issued by a school, or city/state/federal government agency; AND show your first and last name; AND the photograph must be clearly recognizable. The ID must be original, not a photocopy or reproduction (i.e., photo bearing driver’s license, photo bearing passport, photo bearing military identification card, photo bearing school identification card, high school yearbook (within the last two years), or letter from high school on official school letterhead. Identification letter must show the examinee’s first and last names and must include a full physical description (age, gender, height, weight, race, hair and eye color) or a recent recognizable photograph with a school seal or school official’s signature overlapping a portion of the photo. Letters must be printed on original and official letterhead. If the official letterhead is computer generated or photocopied, it must be embossed with a raised or inked school seal. Student and school official must sign the letter in ink – student will re-sign the letter during check-in and letters will be collected by testing staff.

IDENTIFICATION NOT ACCEPTABLE: Social Security card, birth certificate, ID issued by employer, diploma, fishing or hunting license, driver’s permit without an official photo, and web page with photo.

Mechanical pencils, cellular telephones, beepers, cameras, and ALL photographic, communication, computer, and electronic devices are strictly prohibited in the testing room.

Food, drinks, gum, candy, and tobacco products are not permitted in the testing room.

Important Information

  • Approved calculators may be used during the Mathematics Test but they must be turned off and put away when you are not working on that test.
  • You are not permitted to use or access the following items at any time, including during the break:
    1. Textbooks, foreign language or other dictionaries, scratch paper, notes or other aids.
    2. Highlight pens, colored pens or pencils, correction fluid/tape.
    3. Communication devices (including cell phones)
    4. Computers (including handhelds)
    5. Recording devices (including cameras, scanners, tape recorders)
    6. Media devices (including games, music video, headphones, players)
    7. Reading material (including books, magazines)
    8. Mechanical pencils
    9. Tobacco in any form
    10. Timers, or any other electronic devices

Calculator Policy

You may use a calculator on the ACT Assessment Mathematics Test (but not on any of the other tests in the ACT Assessment). You are not required to use a calculator.

You may use a 4 function (add, subtract, multiply, divide), scientific, or graphing calculator that is not listed on the prohibited list.

Prohibited Calculators

The following types of calculators are prohibited:

  • Texas Instruments: All models numbers that begin with TI-89 or TI-92 and the TI-Nspire CAS.
  • Hewlett-Packard: HP 48GII and all model numbers that begin with HP 40G, HP 49G or HP 50G
  • Casio: Algebra fx 2.0, ClassPad 300 and ClassPad 330, and all model numbers that begin with CFX-9970G
  • Calculators with built-in computer algebra systems
  • Pocket organizers
  • Handheld or laptop computers
  • Electronic writing pads or pen-input devices --The Sharp EL 9600 is permitted.
  • Calculators built into cellular phones or other electronic communication devices.
  • Calculators with a typewriter keypad (keys in QWERTY format). Calculators with letter keys not in QWERTY format are permitted.

Test Duration and Test Scoring Information

  • Plan to be at the test center for about 4 hours
  • The ACT Residual test scores should be available one day after the test date. ACT Residual test scores are valid only at SFASU. No additional reports will be generated to report scores to any other institution. To receive your scores, contact the Admissions Office @ 936-468- 2504 or go by the Rusk Building, Room 208 8: a.m. – 5 p.m. Monday – Friday.

Accommodations for Examinees with Disabilities:

If you require accommodations based on a professionally diagnosed and documented disability, you must submit documentation to support your request to SFASU Disability Services. All documentation must be submitted well in advance of ACT-Residual testing dates.

The only accommodations allowed for Residual Testing purposes are:

  • Extended time
  • Marking responses in the test booklet
  • An interpreter to sign spoken instructions
  • Food, drink or medication (for medical conditions)

If Braille, large type, cassette, audio DVD version of the ACT, the assistance of a reader or any other accommodation not previously specified is required or if you are applying for scholarships or NCAA initial eligibility, you must contact ACT at (319) 337-1332 or under “Students with Disabilities.”  Residual Testing scores are not accepted for NCAA initial eligibility. The 60-retest restriction applies to all Residual Testing, including students with disabilities.
