CERT - Prep ELL Project

James I. Perkins College of Education

ABOUT THE GRANT

The Consortium for Excellence in Rural Teacher Preparation for English Language Learners (CERT-Prep ELL) Program at Stephen F. Austin State University (SFA) is a federally funded Transition to Teaching Grant that awards up to $5,000 in scholarship monies to qualifying participants to help alleviate the costs of obtaining the initial teacher certification through SFA. The CERT-Prep ELL Program is specifically looking for individuals who desire to teach in high-needs subject areas in high-needs school districts in the East Texas area. In addition, the program is seeking participants who wish to address the special needs of teaching English Language Learners (ELL) and who are interested in obtaining the supplemental English as a Second Language (ESL) and/or Bilingual teacher’s certification.

The flexible, high-quality transition to teaching certification programs are one to two year programs that are offered through SFA’s convenient web-based courses. These programs include a field experience component which can assist qualified individuals from a variety of backgrounds to serve as teachers earning a teacher salary while completing coursework. This, combined with the CERT-Prep ELL scholarship, helps remove financial barriers and assists well-qualified and diverse individuals to enter into the teaching profession.

Partners in SFA’s CERT-Prep ELL Program include eleven high-needs school districts in the East Texas area who serve on an Advisory Council for the project. Partner school districts serve to collaborate with project staff to meet district staffing needs through hiring teacher candidates from the CERT-Prep ELL Program.
