Certification Applications

Standard

A standard certificate application is used to apply for all initial teaching certificates including elementary EC-4 and 4-8 grade levels, secondary 6-12 and 8-12 grade levels and all level PK-12 and EC-12 grade levels.  The standard certificate application is also used for other school personnel certificates such as principal, superintendent, reading specialist, educational diagnostician and school counselor.

  1. Students who are seeking initial certification:
    • Probationary certificates for initial certification are limited to students currently enrolled in the Post Baccalaureate Initial Certification (PBIC) program who have received approval from the PBIC Manager*.  The maximum limit for a Probationary certificate is three years. 
    • Probationary certificates for PBIC students may be extended on a yearly basis.  Approval from the SFA program manager is required for all extensions of PBIC probationary certificates. 
    • Recommendations for Probationary certificates for PBIC students will be made on the twenty-first day from the first day of class in the Fall/Spring semester.
  2. Students who are seeking certification as a Principal/Superintendent and have been assigned in an Assistant Principal or an Assistant Superintendent position or as a Principal or Superintendent in a temporary position:
    • The Principal/Superintendent Probationary certificate provides a means for an individual to be hired by a school district prior to completing all Principal/Superintendent program certification requirements. 
    • The Principal candidates who continue their assignment before all requirements are met may ask for an extension approval from the SFA program administrator, Dr. Janet Tareilo.**  The Probationary Principal certificate has a maximum limit of three years. 
    • The Superintendent candidates who continue their assignment before all requirements are met may ask for an extension approval from the SFA program administrator, Dr. Pauline Sampson.***  The Probationary Superintendent certificate has a maximum limit of three years. 
    • Probationary Principal/Superintendent recommendations will be made on the twenty-first day from the first day of class in the Fall/Spring semester for.  For Summer I and II, recommendations will be given Mid Term as indicated in SFA's Summer schedule.
  3. Students who are seeking certification as a School Counselor and have been assigned in a School Counselor position.
    • The School Counselor Probationary certificate is limited to those students who have been accepted, enrolled officially in the School Counselor program and approved for the School Counselor Probationary certificate based on preparation and review by the Counselor Education Program.
    • A Teacher Service Record (TSR) and the Annual Approval Form generated from the Counselor Education Program department must be submitted with the application.
    • The School Counselor candidates who continue their assignment before all requirements are met may ask for an extension approval from the School Counselor Program administrator, ****Dr. Lei’Ann Solmonson. The Probationary School Counselor certificate has a maximum limit of three years.
    • School Counselor Probationary certificate recommendations will be made on the twenty-first day from the first day of class in the Fall/Spring semester. For Summer I and II, recommendations will be given Mid Term as indicated in SFA’s Summer schedule.
