Sophomore Advising

As a Sophomore, you probably have many of the Core Curriculum classes taken. Continue taking the Core Curriculum classes that you need. In addition, you may now begin taking the Pre-professional Teacher Education classes, RDG 318, and even the first of the classes in your program area. However, the bulk of your schedule should be from the Core Curriculum.

All students should take the following courses
prior to the internship semesters:
MTH 127 Introduction to Mathematics for Elementary Teachers
MTH 128 Intermediate Mathematics for Elementary Teachers
MTH College level math course approved by advisor.
Students are required to have taken 9 hours of
college level math classes PRIOR to starting Internship II.
CHE/PHY 125 Introductory Physical Science
BIO 121 OR GOL 131 BIO 121 - Concepts of Biology
GOL 131 - Introductory Geology
SPE 329
Survey of Exceptionalities
EPS 380
Educational Psychology
ELE 304
Technology in Teaching
RDG 318
Early Literacy Development
RDG 314
Teaching Reading Through Children's Literature

RDG 318 is a prerequisite for RDG 314.

In RDG 318 you will take a basic skills test which is required for

admission into the Elementary Education Program.

For the EC-6 Program students should take the following
courses prior to Internship I:
HMS 241 and Lab Sensory, Perceptual, Motor Development of Young Children
HMS 242 Family, School and Community Relations
   Take the above classes together! These are the only Early Childhood classes that you can double up on. The rest are designed to be taken in sequential order. Put these into your schedule first and then make the rest of your arrangements for your other courses.
ECH 328 and Lab Psycho-Social Development
ECH 331 and Lab Child-Centered Environments 
RDG 320 Upper Level Literacy Development

Early Childhood Course Sequence
HMS 241, HMS 241L (1 hour) and HMS 242 6 hrs
ECH 328 and ECH 328L (1 hour) 3 hrs
ECH 331 and ECH 331L (1 hour) 4 hrs
Internship I: ECH 332 3 hrs
Internship II: ECH 432 and ECH 432L 2 hrs


For the 4-8 Program students should take courses in the Content Area.
