Mid-level Grades Distance Education Program
The Elementary Education Department at Stephen F. Austin State University is pleased to be offering a program for a special group of students who seek the middle level fourth through eighth-grade certification for teaching and a Bachelor of Science Degree in Interdisciplinary Studies.
We know that there are many dedicated students who are unable to pursue traditional campus-based, college careers. Texas needs more excellent teachers. Therefore, even though we highly recommend face-to-face courses and think these courses best serve most students, we are pleased to offer an online program in order to meet the needs of this special population.
This special group of students includes the following:
- people who are paraprofessionals (aides) in public schools.
- heads of household with dependents.
- people who have full time jobs and cannot attend regular daytime classes.
- primary care providers for family or other dependents.
- people living 60 miles or more distance from a university.
- others with extenuating circumstances.
Requirements for admission to the program
- Self discipline and technological skills
- GPA of 3.0 in approved 45 hours of specified courses
- Prior or current experiences with children and access to a middle level classroom for field experience
- Commitment to four trips to Nacogdoches, Texas, to coincide with laboratory courses
Applicants must agree to:
- take all SFA courses online. The content in the regular face-to-face courses is configured in a different manner.
- come to the SFASU campus in Nacogdoches, at my own expense, one trip per semester, not to exceed three days in any given trip for labs which coincide with courses.
- take the courses in this program in the specified sequence. have access to a computer, scanner, and Microsoft Office software, digital camera and video camera.
- have access to grades 4-8 classrooms and children and can get permission to videotape.
- abide by all rules, policies and requirements of the University, College of Education, and Department of Elementary Education.
Steps to be completed for admission to the program and university
- Apply for admission to the MLG 4—8 Distance Education Completion Program (Admission to the program is contingent upon admission to the University.)
- Apply for admission to Stephen F. Austin State University.
- Apply for financial aid if needed.
- Be advised by the Coordinator of this program, Michelle Williams mlgonline@sfasu.edu
- Meet the criteria for admission to Teacher Education at approximately 66 credit hours
