Kinesiology and Health Science

Welcome to the Department of Kinesiology and Health Science

Mission:
The primary purposes of the Department of Kinesiology and Health Science are related to the preparation of undergraduate health, kinesiology, and dance professionals and the development of total fitness and health and recreational sports skills of the university through programs of fitness and lifetime sports. In addition, programs leading to endorsement and certification are offered in the areas of first aid, personal training, and water safety. The Department also offers the opportunity for the preparation of athletic coaches. The Department is a member of the American Kinesiology Association.

The mission of Health Science Program is to provide quality academic education and structured professional experiences designed to prepare students to promote health and enhance the quality of life for individuals and their communities. The EC-12 Health Program is “Nationally Recognized” by the American Association of Health Education (AHHE).

The mission of the Undergraduate Kinesiology Program is to provide high quality educational experiences and opportunities to students seeking knowledge in a wide variety of fields, within the discipline of human movement.  The Department also promotes the physical, mental and emotional well being of the university community by providing opportunities to participate in unique movement and leisure pursuits thereby contributing to the enhancement of the university community’s quality of life. 

The Kinesiology Professional Division offers a diverse program of undergraduate study. Students may major or minor in the division and pursue a Pedagogy or Fitness and Human Performance Studies emphasis.

The Kinesiology Pedagogy Program is in compliance with the guidelines established by the National Association for Sport and Physical Education (NASPE). This emphasis prepares students for teaching EC-12 physical education and coaching athletic teams.

The Fitness and Human Performance Studies emphasis focuses on preparing students for the highly sought after American College of Sports Medicine’s, Health and Fitness Specialist (HFS) certification. This emphasis prepares students to work in health and fitness clubs, as well as clinical settings.

The mission of the Dance Program is to professionally prepare future teachers who possess a breadth of understanding in the discipline and who will continue to uphold standards of excellence. In turn the students will make contributions to dance in education and as an art form. Students are encouraged to reach their highest technical and creative potential to the extent that, should they desire to pursue graduate studies in Dance or a performing career, they will be sufficiently prepared to realize their goals.

The Graduate Program in the Department of Kinesiology and Health Science offers a course of study leading to a Master of Education in Kinesiology or a Master of Science in Athletic Training. The Master of Science in Athletic Training is an entry-level program that upon completion will enable the student to be eligible to sit for the Board of Certification (BOC) national examination. The Master of Science in Athletic Training is accredited at the graduate level by CAATE.
