Admission/Retention
A minimum of 14 students will be admitted per cohort.
Admittance to Graduate Athletic Training Education Program (ATEP):
The Graduate Athletic Training Education Program gas a highly competitive admissions program. Prospective graduate athletic training students must first be accepted to the Stephen F. Austin State University Graduate School before applicants will be considered for the GATEP review process. Acceptance to the Graduate School nor meeting the GATEP’s criteria guarantees acceptance into the GATEP. Transfer students are not accepted due to the designed block plan. Applications are accepted up to February 1st of the calendar year, or until all positions are filled.
Requirements for acceptance into the SFA Graduate ATEP are as follows:
- Admittance to SFA Graduate School.
- Minimum of a 2.5 GPA on all undergraduate work taken prior to receiving a bachelor’s degree.
- Leveling coursework MUST be completed prior to starting classes in the athletic training program as per current program practices with a grade of C or better.
- Completed application form.
- Completed medical history, physical examination by physician, TB skin test, and current tetanus immunization.
- Signed Technical Standards forms (endorsed approval by physician and student-signed).
- Copy of current First Aid / CPR / AED / certification.
- All applications received by Februrary 1 are assured consideration. Applications received after that date will be reviewed if positions are available.
Leveling Courses-Please include a copy of all syllabi in your application package if your course title is different from the examples provided.

Retention requirement for the SFA Graduate ATEP are as follows:
- Maintenance of a minimum GPA of 3.0 (overall).
- Grade of B or better in all athletic training course work. Athletic Training course(s) in which a grade of B has not been attained must be retaken, thus delaying graduation and completion of the program.
- Completion of clinical hour requirements per academic semester with a minimum of 800 hours for the academic program.
- Adherence to the NATA Code of Ethics
- Maintenance of technical standards
