OUR VISION

Our vision is to have athletic training graduates who are recognized by future students, their peers, and employers as quality certified athletic trainers who exhibit a desire for success, a passion for continual learning and teaching, and a commitment to responsible global citizenship in the community.

MISSION STATEMENT

The mission of the Stephen F. Austin Graduate Entry-Level Athletic Training Education Program (GATEP) is to provide a student-focused learning environment by introducing the athletic training student to various disciplines and applications in Allied Health professions in preparation for a career in Athletic Training and other related fields. Through this journey we are also committed to promoting personal development and growth to becoming competent and ethical professionals.

CURRICULM GOALS

The nature and main objective of the GATEP, Master of Science in Athletic Training, is to prepare the student to become a Certified Athletic Trainer (ATC) by the Board of Certification (BOC). An athletic trainer is "a qualified health care professional educated and experienced in the management of health care problems associated with the physically active." In cooperation with physicians and other allied health care personnel, the athletic trainer functions as an integral member of the athletic health team in secondary schools, colleges and universities, professional sports programs, sports medicine clinics, and other allied health care settings. The athletic trainer functions in cooperation with medical personnel, athletic administrators, coaches, and parents in the development and coordination of efficient and responsive athletic health care delivery systems. Athletic training students will be prepared in the development and mastery of athletic training competencies and proficiencies as set forth by the Educational Council (EC) of the NATA, Joint Review Committee of Athletic Training (JRC-AT) of the Commission on the Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). These skills will include areas of prevention, recognition and evaluation, management/treatment and disposition, rehabilitation, organization and administration, and education and counseling. The development and mastery of these skills will be accomplished through a variety of didactic and clinical experiences (NATA, 2003).

The student should:

  1. Have a sound knowledge of risk management content such as prevention, assessment, evaluation, emergency care for the physically active, as well as the ability to apply protective devices for the prevention or rehabilitation of injuries.
    Understand the basic knowledge of human anatomy as applied to biomechanical and physiological principles involved with the improvement of motor performance and the prevention of injury,
  2. Have a sound knowledge of acute care, pathology, pharmacological aspects, and nutritional aspects of injury and illness and general medical conditions sustained by the physically active.
  3. Show efficiency in the understanding and application of therapeutic modalities and therapeutic rehabilitation equipment in the use of injuries to the physically active.
  4. Understand management theories, principles, strategies, and techniques applicable to administration in health care.
  5. Develop a desire for professional development and responsibilities through a progression of clinical rotations, attendance of professional organizations within the profession of Athletic Training, and understanding of effective supervision and management in the athletic training room.
  6. Have the ability to interact with administration and supervisory roles, the physically active patient, team physicians, and peers within the profession of Athletic Training.
  7. Meet the NATA BOC requirements for certification and complete the competencies and proficiencies as set forth by the JRC-AT / CAAHEP.
  8. Understand and adhere to the "Code of Ethics" of the National Athletic Trainers' Association, the Texas Athletic Training Advisory Board, and the Texas Department of Health and Safety.
