Fitness and Human Performance Studies
Increases in public awareness of the importance of overall health, physical activity, and
exercise has led to intensive growth in the public and private sectors of health and fitness
clubs (primary and secondary intervention), as well as clinical settings often housed
within hospitals (secondary and tertiary intervention). In response to this growth, the
demand for professionally certified individuals has increased greatly.
The American College of Sports Medicine is the leader among certifying organizations
offering several certifications within these areas. Our Fitness and Human Performance
Studies emphasis is designed to prepare students for the highly sought after American
College of Sports Medicine’s, Health and Fitness Specialist certification. In addition,
many of our students also go on to graduate programs within cardiac rehabilitation,
physical and occupational therapy, and exercise physiology.
As an integral part of the FHP Studies, our Human Performance Lab facilities are
equipped with state-of-the-art equipment for analysis of human movement, health
appraisal and exercise prescription, as well as providing research opportunities.

Performance for your body, your mind, and your life
Lab Description:
- The Human Performance Lab is located in the Department of Kinesiology and Health
Science Annex. The HPL is fully equipped with state-of-the-art equipment (listed
below) specifically designed to measure physiological determinants, responses and
human performance within various types of stress (i.e. exercise, work,
environmental). The HPL is also heavily focused on exercise testing and
measurement, as it applies to client screening, prescription and behavior change.
Additionally, we also have an 800-square-foot Strength and Conditioning Lab that is
equipped with Power Systems free weights and machines.
- The labs are utilized for instruction in a number of undergraduate courses, as well as
providing research opportunities for faculty and students. Recently, both
undergraduate and graduate students have received state and university awards for
research performed in our facilities.
