The Doctoral Faculty Council in the Department of Secondary Education and Educational Leadership has scheduled all department classes on alternating weekends to accommodate the schedule of practicing administrators. The only exceptions are the first summer semester with classes on Fridays and two Saturdays and any elective classes that are taken outside the department. During the first fall and spring semesters of doctoral study, when the students complete the residency requirement, the classes are on alternating Friday evenings and all day Saturday. In all other subsequent semesters the department classes are on Saturday.
Doctoral students travel from as far south as Beaumont and Houston, west from Dallas, far north from Wichita Falls, and north from Longview. Students are in school leadership roles and include: superintendents, an assistant superintendent, principals, assistant principals, program directors, service center field representative, college faculty members, and teachers.
The research assistants are assigned to the Educational Research Center and work with faculty on research projects. Current topics include: multicultural education, accountability testing, and the schooling experiences of students from Spanish speaking countries. The research assistants work with faculty and the Center for twenty hours per week and also complete independent projects with support from the faculty.
Applicants for the next cohort may apply now. A new cohort begins each summer. See the website for application materials and information.
