NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - "A Message from Siberia," a selection of drawings, photographs and prints by artists from Russia, is currently on display in Stephen F. Austin State University's Griffith Gallery until Sunday, Sept. 14.
With the exception of two artists from Ufa, Russia, the artists included in the exhibition are from an area near Novosibirsk, Siberia, Russia, and their art represents the quality of work being produced in that region, explained Charles Jones, SFA regents professor of art.
The exhibition, which was curated by Jones and Andrey Martynov, general director of the Moscow Biennial of Contemporary Art, is a sample of the much larger body of work scheduled to be exhibited at The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House in downtown Nacogdoches in November 2009.
Jones and Martynov met while both were jurying the Ural Print Triennial competition in November 2007, in Ufa, Bashkortistan, Russia. After Martynov visited SFA in the spring, the two men made plans for exchange exhibitions in 2009 that would counter stereotypes Russians have about Texans and Texans have about Russians.
The exhibition is a joint presentation of the SFA College of Fine Arts and School of Art.
Griffith Gallery is located in Room 208 of the Griffith Fine Arts Building, 2222 Alumni Dr. on the SFA campus. Gallery hours are 12:30 to 5 p.m., Tuesday through Sunday. For more information, please call (936) 468-1131.
