SFA to Present Renowned Pianist and Wind Quintet

Sylvia Bierschenk - February 26, 2008

NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - The Stephen F. Austin State University College of Fine Arts will present pianist Leon Bates and the Borealis Wind Quintet in concert at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 4, as part of its 2007-2008 University Series.

Called "one of America's best" in Europe, Bates has performed to critical acclaim in virtually all of the major halls in the United States and in many others on nearly every continent. The Seattle Times wrote, "Leon Bates is a pianist of natural exuberance and great breadth."

During Tuesday's concert, Bates will perform "Jeaux d'Eau" by Maurice Ravel and collaborate with the Borealis Wind Quintet in presenting "Sextet, Theme and Variations, Op. 45" by Theodor Blumer and "Sextet fro Piano and Winds, Op. 6" by Ludwig Thuille.

The quintet, composed of flutist Katherine Fink, oboist Tamar Beach Wells, clarinetist Kathryn Taylor, horn player Dan Culpepper, and bassoonist Wayne Hileman, will open the concert with "Suite, Op. 57" by Charles Lefebvre.

Nominated for a 2006 Grammy for Best Chamber Music Performance, the Borealis Wind Quintet has been invited to perform on the most prestigious chamber music series and national radio broadcasts, said Sylvia Bierschenk, director of Arts Information at SFA. "The quintet enjoys a well-earned reputation for providing dynamic, balanced programs with extraordinary audience appeal."

"In addition to presenting a wonderful evening of music to East Texans on Tuesday, the musicians will conduct master classes with SFA students on Wednesday," said John W. Goodall, associate dean and director of programming and development for the SFA College of Fine Arts. "They are each deeply committed to sharing their talent and craft."

Prior to the concert, Christopher Ayer, SFA associate professor of music, will give a brief informative talk on the program at 7 p.m. in Griffith Gallery, across the hall from Turner Auditorium. Audience members are also invited to a post-performance reception in the gallery to meet the artists and honor the event's corporate sponsor, Commercial Bank of Texas.

Adult tickets range from $35 to $17.50, with 50 percent discounts for students. For tickets or more information, please call (936) 468-6407 or (888) 240-ARTS, or purchase tickets on-line.
