SFA Wind Ensemble to Perform Concert

Sylvia Bierschenk - January 22, 2008

NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - As a prelude to its February performance at the Texas Music Educators Association convention in San Antonio, the SFA Wind Ensemble will present a concert at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 29, in W.M. Turner Auditorium on the campus of Stephen F. Austin State University.

Over 24,000 people are expected to attend this year's TMEA convention, which brings together music educators from across the state. This is the ninth time the SFA band has been invited to perform for this distinguished audience, explained Fred J. Allen, SFA director of bands and director of the ensemble.

The highlight of the program will be the world premiere of "Tarantella" by Stephen Lias, SFA associate professor of theory and composition. The piece was commissioned by SFA chapters of Tau Beta Sigma and Kappa Kappa Psi, honorary band sorority and fraternity.

"Steve has written a great deal of music and won several awards," said Allen. "But this is his first composition for concert band. We are excited about performing it here and in San Antonio."

Brett A. Richardson, SFA assistant director of bands, will conduct the band in performing Percy Grainger's "The Duke of Marlborough Fanfare," and David W. Campo, SFA associate director of bands, will direct "Starry Crown" by Donald Grantham.

"This is a new, exciting piece," said Campo. "It was written in honor of one of our biggest supporters, John Whitwell, who was the director of bands at SFA from 1987 to 1993."

The program also includes Allen's transcription of Frederick Delius'"The Walk to the Paradise Garden" and the second movement of Ottorino Respighi's "Church Windows," transcribed by Kevin Whitelaw, SFA alumnus.

The concert will close with "The Whirlwinds," a march written for the SFA Wind Ensemble by retired area band director, Waymon Bullock.

The band will present this same program at Texas Lutheran University in Seguin at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 13. The TMEA concert is scheduled for 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 14, in the Lila Cockrell Auditorium at the Henry Gonzalez Convention Center in downtown San Antonio.

The Nacogdoches concert is a joint presentation of the SFA College of Fine Arts and School of Music. Tickets are $5 for adults, $4 for seniors and $2 for students. For tickets or more information, please (936) 468-6407 or (888) 240-ARTS, or purchase tickets on-line.
