SFA's Summer Theatre Season Showcases Alumni

Sylvia Bierschenk - July 10, 2007

NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - The final week of Stephen F. Austin State University School of Theatre's Summer Repertory Season showcases the work of three of the school's alumni designers.

Erin Shaw, teacher and freelance costume designer who received her bachelor's and master's degrees from SFA in 1982 and 1985, respectively, designed the costumes for Jon Klein's "Dimly Perceived Threats to the System" and the musical revue, "Tintypes."

Klein's show will be presented Wednesday, July 11, and Thursday, July 12, and "Tintypes" will run Friday, July 13, and Saturday, July 14. All shows are at 7:30 p.m. in W.M. Turner Auditorium.

Clint Allen, who received his bachelor's degree from SFA in 1996 and currently works for The Alley Theatre in Houston, designed the lighting for this week's shows as well as for the season's opening comedy, "Tribute" by Bernard Slade.

The scenic design for "Tintypes" was created by Paul Davis, a 1997 graduate who teaches and works as a freelance designer in the Austin area.

"With this season being the final one for Dr. Clarence Bahs as the School of Theatre's director, we though it fitting to bring in some of our alumni, to showcase their talents," said Allen Oster, professor of theatre and the Summer Repertory creative director.

"Dimly Perceived Threats to the System" is a "hilarious glimpse at the modern family in which reality and fantasy become indistinguishable," said Rick Jones, associate professor of theatre and the play's director. It is recommended for mature audiences.

"Tintypes," which was conceived by Mary Kyte with Mel Marvin and Gary Pearle, is a "nostalgic but thrillingly subversive musical revue which takes us back to pre-World War I," explained Alan Nielsen, SFA professor of theatre and the show's director. The show includes over 40 songs by composers such as George M. Cohan, John Philip Sousa and Victor Herbert.
