SFA's Chamber Music Festival Ends Sunday

Sylvia Bierschenk - July 13, 2007

NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - The Stephen F. Austin State University School of Music's Chamber Music Festival in the Pines will conclude with the "20th Century Concert" at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, July 15, in Cole Concert Hall.

The first three concerts each featured music from a different musical period, and Sunday's will showcase music composed since 1900.

Flutist Christina Guenther, SFA assistant professor of music, and pianist Ron Petti, SFA director of accompanying, will open the concert with "First Sonata for Flute and Piano" by Bohuslav Martinu. According to Guenther, "Martinu's distinct compositional style is rhythmic with careful attention to tone color."

Clarinetist Christopher Ayer, SFA associate professor of music, and guest pianist Kae Hosoda-Ayer will present Witold Lutoslawski's "Dance Preludes" and Leonard Bernstein's "Sonata."

"In 'Dance Preludes,' Lutoslawski explores short, rhythmic melodies, making simple tunes quite interesting," said Ayer. "And 'Sonata,' written when Bernstein was only 23 or 24 years old, foreshadows his later great works such as 'West Side Story.' Both pieces we are performing are beautiful."

The concert will close with violinist Jennifer Dalmas, SFA assistant professor of music, joining Ayer and Hosoda-Ayer in performing "L'Histoire du Soldat" by Igor Stravinsky.

The concert is a joint presentation of the SFA College of Fine Arts and the School of Music and is sponsored in part by Ed and Gwen Cole. After the concert, the SFA Friends of Music will host a reception in the lobby.

Concert tickets, which can be purchased at the door, are $10 for adults, $7.50 for seniors and $5 for students.
