NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - The Music Preparatory Division of the Stephen F. Austin State University School of Music will register students for private lessons, classes and ensembles from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 16, in the lobby of the Wright Music Building on the SFA campus.
"We invite both children and adults to explore the wonderful world of music through our numerous offerings," said Pat Barnett, division director. "Private lessons in cello, classical guitar, harp, piano, Suzuki violin/viola, traditional violin/viola, voice, flute, percussion, clarinet and fiddle are among the options from which to choose. Other instrumental study can be offered by request."
Private lessons taught by upper-level music preparatory faculty will begin the week of August 18, and those taught by SFA student teachers and piano pedagogy teachers will begin the week of Sept. 8.
The division also offers musicianship classes to strengthen students' music theory knowledge, Barnett explained. These 15-week courses are taken either in conjunction with private lessons or as a separate class.
Three different choirs are also available. The Live Wire is open to children in kindergarten through second grade, the Lyric Choir to third through fifth graders, and the Junior Chorale to sixth through eighth graders. Auditions for the Lyric Choir and Junior Chorale will be held from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 11. The choirs will begin weekly rehearsals for 12 weeks beginning Sept. 15 and 16.
Area string students may audition for The Piney Woods Youth Orchestra at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 23, in Room 170 of the Wright Music Building. Under the direction of Dr. Evgeni Raychev and Dr. Jennifer Dalmas, the orchestra will rehearse once a week, beginning Tuesday, Aug. 26. For more information about the orchestra, contact Raychev at raycheve@sfasu.edu.
Certified Kindermusik teacher Karen Greer will teach three different age-appropriate evening classes for newborns through 5-year-olds beginning the week of Sept. 4.
"The Kindermusik early childhood music and movement program is based on the beliefs that every child is musical, every parent is the child's most important teacher and the home is the most important place for learning to take root and grow," Barnett said.
"Our entire faculty is dedicated to nurturing an enjoyable yet challenging environment for its students," Barnett continued.
