"Patrons of all ages-from toddlers to senior citizens-will enjoy this musical version of Aesop's popular fable about a Roman slave who removes a thorn from a wild lion's paw," said Alan Nielsen, SFA professor of theatre and the show's director. "The slapstick humor that is part of the Commedia dell'arte style will bring laughter, while the story will teach lessons of loyalty and gratitude."
To accommodate the young audience members' schedules, the evening performances on Friday, June 27; Wednesday, July 9; and Thursday, July 10; will begin at 7 p.m.
"We're also offering a 2 p.m. matinee on Saturday, June 28, and Monday, June 30," said Diane Flynn, SFA Fine Arts Box Office manager. "These show times offer a great alternative to outdoor activities in the heat of the day, and the Saturday matinee enables the whole family to attend."
After each performance of "Androcles and the Lion," the actors will come out to the lobby in costume to meet and greet the audience members.
"The children love to meet the characters," said Nielsen, "and the actors enjoy the interaction, too!"
The SFA summer theatre season also includes "Driving Miss Daisy" and "Crimes of the Heart." "Daisy" will be presented in W.M. Turner Auditorium at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, July 2; Thursday, July 3; and Tuesday, July 8; and "Crimes" will be presented in the Downstage Theatre at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 24; Wednesday, June 25; Saturday, June 28; Tuesday, July 1; Friday, July 11; and Saturday, July 12.
