NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - Tickets are now on sale for the Stephen F. Austin State University School of Theatre's summer repertory season that includes "Driving Miss Daisy," "Crimes of the Heart" and a children's musical, "Androcles and the Lion."
"We've got a great line-up this season," said Scott Shattuck, director of the School of Theatre. "And we're offering the shows in true repertory fashion so that even if you're out on vacation for a week, you'll still have an opportunity to see all three."
The season will open with Alfred Uhry's "Driving Miss Daisy" at 7:30 p.m. Friday, June 20, in W.M. Turner Auditorium.
"It's a delightfully funny and deeply moving play that traces the changing times in the American South and a 25-year relationship built between a strong-willed Jewish widow and her good-natured African American chauffeur," explained Allen Oster, SFA professor of theatre and the show's director.
SFA alumnus Darrell D. Grant returns to the Turner stage as Miss Daisy's driver, a role made famous by Morgan Freeman in the 1989 "Best Picture" Oscar winner for which Jessica Tandy won Best Actress. Uhry also won an Academy Award for his script, adapted from the play that garnered a 1988 Pulitzer Prize.
In addition to the June 20 opening, the play will be presented again on Saturday, June 21; Wednesday, July 2; Thursday, July 3; and Tuesday, July 8.
Beth Henley's "Crimes of the Heart" will be presented at 7:30 p.m. in the Downstage Theatre on Tuesday, June 24; Wednesday, June 25; Tuesday, July 1; Friday, July 11,and Saturday, July 12.
"This is an uproarious celebration of family and life," explained Shattuck, the play's director. "The three MaGrath sisters reunite at their Mississippi home after the youngest, Babe, shoots her husband because she 'just didn't like his stinking looks.' The story balances gentle heartbreak with outrageous Southern Gothic humor."
The play won a Pulitzer Prize and went on to become a Broadway hit and movie starring Diane Keaton, Jessica Lange and Sissy Spacek. It is recommended for mature audiences.
"Androcles and the Lion" rounds out the summer season. The musical version of Aesop's fable about the friendship spawned when a Roman slave pulls a thorn from a wild lion's paw will delight audiences of all ages, according to Alan Nielsen, SFA professor of theatre and the show's director.
To accommodate the young audience members, the evening productions will begin at 7 p.m. on Friday, June 27; Wednesday, July 9; and Thursday, July 11. Matinees will be presented at 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 28, and Monday, June 30. All shows are in Turner Auditorium.
W.M. Turner Auditorium and the Downstage Theatre are both housed in the Griffith Fine Arts Building located at 2222 Alumni Drive on the SFA campus.
