SFA Theatre to Present 'The Labyrinth'

Sylvia Bierschenk - March 24, 2008

NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - The Stephen F. Austin State University College of Fine Arts and School of Theatre will present a student-directed production of Fernando Arrabal's "The Labyrinth" at 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 4, and at 2 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, April 5, in the Downstage Theater of the Griffith Fine Arts Building.

"The one-act play embodies the playwright's 'theatre of panic,' but we are putting a surrealist twist in our production," explained director Tim Olivares, San Antonio senior. The plot centers on a shackled prisoner who enters a vast maze of blankets and whose efforts to escape are constantly frustrated by the logic of the labyrinth's creators.

Cast members include Crandall freshman Jason Grigsby, British exchange student Carina Low, Lufkin junior Chad McElveen, Houston senior Matthew Reeves Oliver and Austin junior Zach Russell.

Elizabeth Davis, Wylie senior serves as assistant director, and Ashley Zednick, Jacksonville, as stage manager.

Previously, Olivares has directed SFA's production of "The Moon Please" and been a member of The Original Cast. His mainstage appearances include "As You Like It," Tintypes," "The Night of the Iguana," "The Tempest" and "Hair." He has also appeared in the following student-directed productions: "Women and Wallace," "Three Days of Rain," "The Man with the Flower in his Mouth," "Reverse Transcription," "Side Man" and "The Gas Heart."

The Griffith Fine Arts Building is located at 2222 Alumni Drive on the SFA campus. Tickets are $3 each. For tickets or more information, please call (936) 468-6407 or (888) 240-ARTS.
