SFA to Present New String Ensemble in Concert

Sylvia Bierschenk - November 19, 2007

NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - The Stephen F. Austin State University College of Fine Arts and School of Music will present the inaugural performance of the Piney Woods Camerata at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 27, in Cole Concert Hall.

The conductor-less string ensemble is led by SFA faculty members Jennifer Dalmas, violin; Gene H. Moon, viola; and Evgeni Raychev, cello. Additional musicians include teachers and educators from Bullard, Kilgore, Marshall and Tyler.Evgeni Raychev Evgeni Raychev

"We believe that playing for other people enriches a musician's insight and helps him or her better relate techniques and musical issues to students," said Raychev. "In addition, playing together will be a fun and rewarding experience for us all."

The performance will be a part of a commemorative concert series Raychev began in 2005 to recognize distinguished composers during the tri-, bi- or centennial anniversary year of their birth or death.

The Nov. 27 concert commemorates the 100th anniversary of Edward Grieg's death and the 200th anniversary of the birth of Adrien Servais, a Belgian cellist and composer who was as popular on the cello during his time as Niccoló Paganini was on the violin. Included on the program are Grieg's "Heart Wounds" and "Last Spring, Op. 34" and "Fantaisie sur deux airs Russes" by Servais.

"We will also be counting down to the 2013 concert commemorating the 300th anniversary of the death of Arcangelo Corelli, an Italian composer and violin virtuoso who was perhaps the first to establish the foundations of the violin technique," Raychev said. "Between now and then, we will perform all 12 of his Concerti Grossi. Op. 6."

Tickets to the concert are $5 for adults, $4 for seniors and $2 for students. For tickets or more information, please call (936) 468-6407 or (888) 240-ARTS.
