NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - The Stone Fort Wind Quintet, comprised of five faculty members of the Stephen F. Austin State University School of Music, will present a concert, "Old and New," at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 6, in Cole Concert Hall.
As the concert's title suggests, Christina Guenther, flute; John W. Goodall, oboe; Christopher Ayer, clarinet; Kirsten Nelson, bassoon; and Charles Gavin, horn; will perform music from a wide range of time periods.
Included in the "old music" portion of the program is a suite from Ottorino Respighi's "Ancient Airs and Dances," an arrangement of Renaissance dances. While the musicians play the music, members of the SFA Repertory Dance Company will perform an interpretive dance choreographed by Elizabeth Rhodes, SFA professor of dance.
"We are excited about the opportunity to collaborate with the dance company," said Gavin. "The music will certainly be enhanced by the dance interpretation."
The program's "new music" includes premieres of two new works by Texas composers.
"Glide," written by SFA associate professor Stephen Lias, will be performed by the quintet and guest saxophonist Brian Utley, SFA assistant professor of music.
"Steve is well aware of Brian's regular collaboration with our quintet, and so he scored the piece for the six of us," Gavin said. "We are honored to perform the work's premiere."
The Stone Fort Quintet will also be premiering "Quintet for Winds" by Austin composer Brandon Hendrix.
"We selected this piece from over 20 compositions we received from our request for a new work," explained Gavin. "We all were all drawn to the rhythmic intensity and vibrant harmonic language of this piece and are excited to share it."
Tickets for the concert are $5 for adults, $4 for seniors and $2 for students. For tickets or more information, please call (936) 468-6407 or (888) 240-ARTS.
