Sylvia Bierschenk - September 27, 2007

NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - The Stephen F. Austin State University School of Theatre will open its 2007-2008 season with Ken Ludwig's award-winning farce, "Lend Me a Tenor," at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 2, in W.M. Turner Auditorium.

The show, which won two Tony Awards, three Outer Critic Awards and four Drama Desk Awards, will run through Saturday, Oct. 6.Rehearsal of scene from "Lend Me a Tenor" Rehearsal of scene from "Lend Me a Tenor"

Alan Nielsen, SFA professor of theatre and the play's director, said he chose the play because he was looking for a light-hearted show to kick off the season.

"We had a lot of fun with 'Moon Over Buffalo,' a few years ago, so I wanted to stage another comedy by Ken Ludwig, one of the most successful playwrights we have today," Nielsen added.

The plot revolves around Cleveland Grand Opera Company's gala fund-raiser for which the world famous tenor, Tito Morelli, will sing the lead role in Giuseppe Verdi's "Otello."

"But all sorts of complications arise in this comedy-of-errors type production," explained Kyle Kennedy, SFA assistant professor of theatre who is playing the opera company's manager, Saunders.

"As one would expect in a show classified as a 'door-slamming farce,' the action is filled with mistaken identities, amorous interludes and outrageous characters. It's a real crowd-pleaser," Kennedy continued.

Other cast members include Austin senior Kera Dacy, playing Diana; Wylie senior Elizabeth Davis, playing Maggie Saunders; El Campo freshman David Hathway, playing the bellhop; and Kelley senior Sarah McKinney, playing Julia. Also, Alief junior Mark McManus, playing Max; Austin junior Nate Reid, playing Tito Morelli; and Dripping Springs senior Cassidy Risien, playing Maria Morelli.

Due to sexual content, the play is recommended for mature audiences.

"Lend Me a Tenor" is a joint production of the SFA College of Fine Arts and School of Theatre and is sponsored in part by Tipton Ford-Lincoln-Mercury of Nacogdoches.

Tickets are $12 for adults and $6 for seniors and students. For tickets or more information, please call (936) 468-6407 or (888) 240-ARTS, or purchase tickets on-line.
