Guest Pianist and Cellist to Perform at SFA

NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - Guest artists Gustavo Bianchi, piano, and Feng Zhao, cello, will join flutist Christina Guenther, SFA assistant professor of music, in presenting a chamber recital at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 16 in Cole Concert Hall on the SFA campus.

Bianchi and Zhao will open the concert with Ludwig van Beethoven's "Variations for piano and cello on 'See here the conqu'ring hero comes'" and Franz Schubert's "Arpeggione Sonata in A minor, D. 821."

After the intermission, Guenther and Bianchi will perform Schubert's "Variations in E minor on 'Trockne Blumen,' D. 802" and three of his lieder for flute and piano.

Bianchi, who currently resides in Austin, has performed in halls across the United States, South America and Asia. His honors include first place prizes at the Sidney Wright Piano Accompanying Competition, the Bartòk and Kabalevsky International Piano Competition and the Byrd Piano Ensemble Competition. His recording of selected works by Brazilian composer Heitor Villa-Lobos will be released this year.

Zhao, a native of Tianjin, China, began playing the cello at age 10 and gave his first public performance as a soloist when he was 13. He studied at the Shanghai Conservatory with Quian Yi-Shan, a former student of Pablo Casals, and later at Kent State University.

Both Zhao and Bianchi received their doctoral degrees from the University of Texas at Austin and are frequent presenters of recitals and master classes. While visiting the SFA campus, they will give master classes to cello, piano and accompanying students.
