SFA Art Professor to Open Joint Exhibition in Lufkin

Sylvia Bierschenk - January 15, 2008

NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - They were born on opposite sides of the world, but their lives took parallel courses: rural upbringings, soldiering in the Vietnam War, becoming printmakers and teachers. Now Stephen F. Austin State University art professor Charles Jones and Vietnamese artist Dinh Viet Luc are sharing these mirrored lives through the publication of "The Bear Went Over the Mountain," a dual-language book of their and essays and prints.

The book and the prints contained in it will be exhibited at The Museum of East Texas Sunday, Jan. 20, through Friday, Feb. 1. The show will also include some large drawings by Luc, who is currently on the art faculty at the University of Hanoi.

Jones and Luc will both give brief talks during the exhibition's 2 to 4 p.m. opening on Jan. 20.

The book came about after Jones and Luc met at a printmaking conference in Austin in 2001. The men, who had served on opposite sides of the Vietnam War at about the same time, felt a "close sense of companionship" and kept in contact, explained Jones. The two artists eventually developed an idea for a book that would address their commonalities and be published by SFA's fine arts press, the LaNana Creek Press, which Jones directs.

Each of the book's four chapters contains autobiographical writings by both artists on various aspects of their lives, from their childhoods, to their war years, to their calls to art and teaching, to the wisdom they've gained and can pass on to others. All of the text is printed side by side in both English and Vietnamese.

Each chapter also contains two prints by each artist. Jones' woodcuts and Luc's linoleum cuts are printed on thin bamboo paper from Vietnam.

While Luc is visiting East Texas, he and Jones will finish assembling the 40 copies of the hand-stitched, leather-bound books. They will complete 10 or so for the show's opening and finish the rest after that.

The Museum of East Texas is located at 503 N. Second St. in Lufkin and is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, and 1 to 5 p.m., Saturday and Sunday. For more information, please call (936) 639-4434.
