SFA to Present 'Riverdance' Fiddling Star in Christmas Show

Sylvia Bierschenk - November 15, 2007

NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - Eileen Ivers, fiddling star of the original "Riverdance," will present "An Nollaig - An Irish Christmas" at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 1, in W.M. Turner Auditorium on the SFA campus.Eileen Ivers Eileen Ivers

The concert, which is part of the Stephen F. Austin State University College of Fine Arts' University Series, is billed as a "heartwarming holiday show" that "captures the spirit and magic of the season."

The program features traditional Irish songs, original tunes and holiday favorites specially arranged by Eileen Ivers and her band, Immigrant Soul. Her compact disc of the concert's same title was released in October.

Joining Ivers and her band for parts of the program will be Irish step dancers from the Irish Dance Center in Austin and the SFA Madrigal Singers.

Born in an Irish community in The Bronx, Ivers began playing the fiddle at the age of 8 and eventually studied with famed Limerick-born fiddler Martin Mulvihill.

From her star musical turn in "Riverdance," and her 30-plus medals in the All-Ireland championships to her session work and appearances with such diverse artists and ensembles as Paula Cole, Paddy Moloney and the Boston Pops Orchestra, Ivers has established herself among the pre-eminent exponents of the Irish fiddle in the world today.

Billboard magazine called Ivers a "sensation," and The Washington Post stated, "She suggests the future of Celtic fiddle."

Ivers has toured the world not only with "Riverdance" but also with the all-woman folk group Cherish the Ladies, which she helped found, and with such popular contemporary performers as The Hothouse Flowers, Luka Bloom and Patti Smith, and her own band.

In addition to "An Nollaig: An Irish Christmas," Ivers' recording credits include "Crossing the Bridge" (1999) and "Eileen Ivers and Immigrant Soul" (2003) and appearances on over 100 contemporary and traditional albums and numerous movie scores.

"We are pleased to provide this quality entertainment for East Texas," said Dr. A.C. "Buddy" Himes, dean of the SFA College of Fine Arts. "We invite everyone to join us for this wonderful start to the holiday season."

The concert is sponsored in part by Nacogdoches Medical Center.

Tickets range from $35 to $17.50, with discounts available for seniors, students and youth. For tickets or more information, please call (936) 468-6407 or (888) 240-ARTS, or purchase tickets on-line.
