SFA to Present Shakespearean Comedy, 'As You Like It'

Sylvia Bierschenk - November 7, 2007

NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - Rosalind and Orlando are in love, but since she's disguised as Ganymede (a "he"), Orlando doesn't recognize his beloved. Things get more complicated when the "he" offers to help Orlando practice his declaration of love for Rosalind by pretending to be her. Jason Zednick (Orlando) and Katie McBroom (Rosalind)

And this is only one of the numerous love plots intertwined in William Shakespeare's comedy "As You Like It," which the Stephen F. Austin State University School of Theatre will present at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 13, through Saturday, Nov. 17, in W.M. Turner Auditorium.

In Shakespeare's time, the classification of "comedy" referred to any play that ended with one or more couples marrying or deciding to marry. So, even before coming to the theatre, the audience knows that "As You Like It" will end happily.

"In the end, the people we want to get together do," said Rick Jones, SFA associate professor of theatre and the play's director. "It's a sweet, charming play--and I like it anyway!"

Much of the audience's enjoyment relies on their feeling of superiority, explained Jones. "The audience is fully aware that Orlando is wooing Rosalind pretending to be Ganymede pretending to be Rosalind, and so we laugh at Orlando's naiveté."

Mistaken (or hidden) identities abound in this comedy, so the audience gets plenty of opportunities to feel superior.

Modern audiences also equate "comedy" with "humor," and this play delivers that as well, Jones added. "It's got everything from very refined, very verbal humor to slapstick--a little something for everyone."

Katie McBroom, Arlington junior, portrays Rosalind, and Jason Zednick, Jacksonville junior, plays Orlando. Other principal actors are Spring sophomore Austin Chason as Touchstone, Waller senior Jessee Foudray as Celia and Austin senior Guy Vizard as Oliver.

"As You Like It" is a joint presentation of the SFA College of Fine Arts and School of Theatre and is a part of the 2007-2008 University Series. It is sponsored in part by Tipton Ford-Lincoln-Mercury of Nacogdoches.

Tickets are $18 for adults, $12 for seniors and $6 for students. For tickets or more information, please call (936) 468-6407 or (888) 240-ARTS, or purchase tickets on-line.
