SFA to Present Joint Choral Concert

David Howard David Howard NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - David Howard, newly appointed associate director of choral studies at Stephen F. Austin State University, will conduct his first concert in Nacogdoches at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 16, in Cole Concert Hall.

Howard will be directing the 75-member Choral Union and 25-member Women's Choir in a varied program of choral works. Pianist Tracy Ward, graduate student, and members of the Orchestra of the Pines will provide accompaniment.

"The audience will recognize at least two of the major works on the program," said Howard. "The Choral Union will present Antonio Vivaldi's 'Magnificat, RV610a,' and the Women's Choir will sing 'Stabat Mater' by Giovanni Pergolesi."

The Choral Union will also sing works by Joseph Haydn and Robert Schumann and folksongs from Russia, Spain and England. The Women's Choir program also includes works by Felix Mendelssohn and music from Canada.

Prior to joining the SFA faculty in August, Howard taught at the junior high and high school level in the Oklahoma City area. He has also served as artistic director/conductor of two auditioned civic choruses: the Steiner Chorale in Lansing, Mich., and the Midwest Choral Society in Midwest City, Okla.

In addition to choral conducting, Howard maintains an active solo performance schedule with frequent oratorio and cantata presentations by churches, university choirs, community choirs and schools. He has also appeared in opera productions such as the University of Central Oklahoma Opera Theater productions of G.F. Handel's "Samson" and "Die Fledermaus" by Johann Strauss.

Howard completed his Bachelor of Music Education and Master of Music in vocal performance at the University of Central Oklahoma and is a candidate for the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in choral conducting from Michigan State University.
