NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - The Stephen F. Austin State University College of Fine Arts and School of Music will present "Gardens, Parks and Lakes," a joint concert by the Wind Symphony and Symphonic Band at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 25, in W.M. Turner Auditorium on the SFA campus.
The first half of the concert will feature the Symphonic Band, conducted by Brett A. Richardson, 2002 SFA alumnus and newly appointed assistant director of bands. The band's program will include "Flourish for Wind Band" by Ralph Vaughan Williams, "Chester" by William Schuman and "Sleep" by Eric Whitacre. In addition, David W. Campo, associate director of bands and director of the Lumberjack Band, will guest conduct "Country Gardens" by Percy Grainger.
"Our program offers something for everyone," said Richardson. "The Vaughan Williams, Schuman and Grainger are all standards of the wind band repertoire, while Whitacre's 'Sleep' was written for choir just a few years ago. It's great for our audiences and ensembles to be exposed to newer works and standards on the same concert."
Under Campo's direction, the Wind Symphony will perform John Barnes Chance's "Blue Lake Overture," which is dedicated to the Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp of Twin Lake, Mich., and "Yosemite Autumn" by Mark Camphouse.
"Camphouse's piece is a powerfully emotional response to the composer's visit to Yosemite National Park," explained Campo. "He was moved by the park's 'stunning beauty' but also concerned about some of our nation's environmental policies."
Richardson will direct the Wind Symphony in its performance of "Elegy for a Young American" by Ronald Lo Presti, and Fred J. Allen, SFA director of bands, will guest conduct Johannes Hanssen's march, "Valdres."
