Sylvia Bierschenk - September 7, 2007

NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - The Stephen F. Austin State University College of Fine Arts, School of Art and University Series will open "Voices in Cloth: Story Quilts by Faith Ringgold, Linda Freeman and Grace Matthews" with a 6 p.m. reception on Friday, Sept. 14, in Griffith Gallery on the SFA campus.

The exhibition, which includes story quilts by nationally acclaimed artists, originated at the Southern Mississippi Museum of Art and "celebrates quilt making as a dynamic and compelling form of visual and narrative expression," said Christian Cutler, SFA gallery director.Faith Ringgold's "Tar Beach #2"

Faith Ringgold began her artistic career more than 35 years ago as a painter. She is also an award-winning author and illustrator of 11 children's books. Her first book, "Tar Beach," was a Caldecott Honor Book and winner of the Coretta Scott King Award for Illustration.

Today, she is best known for her painted story quilts, an art that combines painting, quilted fabric and storytelling, explained Cutler.

Her work is included in the permanent collections of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, The Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art. She has received more than 75 awards, fellowships, citations and honors, including the Solomon Guggenheim Fellowship for painting, two National Endowment for the Arts Awards and 17 honorary doctorates.

Linda Freeman, like Ringgold, is an accomplished artist in several fields. In addition to her quilts, which fuse painting, quiltmaking and text, she creates award-winning documentary films on 20th and 21st Century artists.

The Chappaqua, N.Y. resident has studied at the Tyler School of Fine Arts, the New York University Film School, the Art Students League and The New School.

Included in "Voices in Cloth" are three of Grace Matthews' quilts from her "American Family" series. These acrylic on canvas quilted artworks honor the importance of family with large-scale, full-length portraits of family members and her family dog, Zoe.

"This is a terrific exhibition that will appeal to a wide audience," said Cutler. "Anyone who appreciates painting, storytelling or textile art will enjoy the show."

The exhibition will run through Sunday, Nov. 4. After the 6 p.m. opening reception on Friday, Sept. 14, regular gallery hours will be 12:30 to 5 p.m., Tuesday through Sunday. Admission to the opening and gallery is free.

The exhibition is sponsored in part by Nacogdoches Junior Forum, the SFA Friends of the Visual Arts and Texas Commission on the Arts. For more information, please call (936) 468-1131.
