Sylvia Bierschenk - February 18, 2008

NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - The Swingin' Axes, Stephen F. Austin State University's jazz band, will present its first concert of the semester at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 29, in W.M. Turner Auditorium on the SFA campus.

According to band director Gary Wurtz, SFA associate professor, the concert will feature a mix of styles and student soloists.

"The band will swing on Duke Ellington's 'In a Mellow Tone,' Horace Silver's 'Filthy McNasty' and Dave Metzger's classic arrangement of 'On A Clear Day,'" Wurtz said. "And Thad Jones' groovy shuffle, 'Big Dipper,' will feature Garland graduate student Jerry Gonzalez on the trumpet."

The Axes will also play an arrangement of "500 Miles High," Chick Corea's composition from his days in the band Return to Forever, and sophomore trumpeter Cris Roman, of Lufkin, will be featured on Michel LeGrand's theme from " Summer of 42."

The concert is a joint presentation of the SFA College of Fine Arts and School of Music.

Tickets are $5 for adults, $4 for seniors and $2 for students. For tickets or more information, please call (936) 468-6407 or (888) 240-ARTS, or purchase tickets on-line.
