SFA School of Art to Premiere Its Latest Film, "Within Us"

Sylvia Bierschenk - January 17, 2007

NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - The Stephen F. Austin State University School of Art will premiere its newest feature-length film, "Within Us" at 7 and 9 p.m. Friday, Feb. 23, and Saturday, Feb. 24, at The Art Center @ The Old Opera House, 329 E. Main St. in downtown Nacogdoches.

Brad Maule as Preston Reynolds

The 91-minute film centers around four key characters. Dr. Oliver Wilcox (played by Donnie Pitchford, Carthage High School teacher) is trapped between doing what's right and achieving lifetime success, and Preston Reynolds (played by "General Hospital" star and SFA adjunct faculty member Brad Maule) is a greedy businessman pressuring Wilcox to do whatever is necessary for success, even if that means betraying those closest to him.

Wilcox works with Dr. Caroline Dubaney (played by Shreveport acting agent Dawn Landrum) to find a cure for schizophrenia. Matters get complicated as Dubaney gets closer to finding out Wilcox's true connection to her patient, Garrick (played by SFA alumnus Derek Johnson), whose battle with schizophrenia forces him to believe the horrific visions he encounters.

William Arscott, SFA professor of art and the film's producer, said he's immensely proud of this sixth film created by his film students in the last seven years.

"I think it's the best one so far," he boasted. "It's taken us a year and a half, but we can all be proud of what we've accomplished."

Initial work on the film began in September 2005 when Johnson and Rob Senska, SFA art student, started writing the script. In early spring 2006, the students readied themselves for production by selecting actors and production crew and lining up locations for shooting the film.

Actual filming, all done in and around Nacogdoches, began May 31 and continued through June 30. Scenes depicting the mental hospital were filmed in SFA's Gibbs Hall, Mr. and Mrs. Roy Fore's house west of Nacogdoches was used to depict Preston Reynold's home, and Dr. Wilcox's lake house scenes were filmed at SFA art professor Gary Frields' home.

Editing was completed in the fall and winter of 2006, during which time music students of Stephen Lias, SFA associate professor of music, wrote the film's score.

One hundred copies of the DVD will be available at the premiere showings, but the School of Art will eventually press 1,000 copies and will be taking orders for these at the premieres.

Tickets for the premiere showings are $5 each. Seating is limited, and tickets can be purchased ahead of time through the SFA Fine Arts Box Office, located in the Griffith Fine Arts Building Room 211. Tickets can be purchased over the phone with a credit card by calling (936) 468-6407 or (888) 240-ARTS.
